Conversation series – Barry

Barry Bennett

Welcome to episode 2 in our Conversation Series, where we hope to continue to introduce you to those who make Junktion tick along, and this month, we want you to meet Barry!

Name: Barry

Role: I do whatever Pixi needs me to do. I usually volunteer on Friday morning but often drop in for coffee at other times.

Years @ Junktion: I have hung around junktion since shortly after they opened off Marion road.

What’s something you’ve really enjoyed experiencing in your time working @ Junktion?

I enjoy working with Pix and the other volunteers. I also enjoy interacting with the customer.

Why are you drawn to opshopping/thrifting?

I think I enjoy opshopping because I’m I’m a collector/hoarder at heart. I have a lot of things at my house that are a result of opshopping. Some valuable some just things that appeal to me.

What’s been your favourite all-time second-hand purchase?

I have a few favourite buys but probably my most recent acquisition ( not from Junktion 😪) is a 1 metre long scale model of Jacques Cousteau’s boat Calypso. It was built by an gentleman who has since passed away. He spent 500 hours over 2 years building it.

How do you think buying preloved & second hand helps our community?

I think opshops are great for the community because they bring people together. They also provide the opportunity for people on lower incomes to buy a variety of things at very affordable prices.

After Junktion, what’s your favourite second-hand shop?

I don’t really have any other favourite opshops. I buy too much from Junktion anyway. I do some collecting on line.

You win a dinner with a celebrity of your choosing – who is it and why?

I guess the obvious answer to the dinner thing is Jesus but I’ll get to do that eventually anyway.
Although she wasn’t a celebrity in the world’s eyes I’d love to have one more meal with my mum who passed away 38 years ago. I’d love to know what she thinks of me now.

Join us next time and meet another valuable member of the team here at Junktion. Don’t forget we are BACK again next week with takeaway coffees and sweet treats, and socially distanced preloved bargains!
