What are you THANKFUL for?

Our little corner

Have you been to our little corner of Adelaide yet? If you have, you’ll understand why we’re so thankful for the space that we have been given here in Happy Valley. So thankful in fact, we held a #thanksgivingfair just recently in November. Check out some of the little snapshots below.

Saturday November 23rd was a beautiful spring day, complete with the smell of sausages on the barbie, freshly brewed coffee in takeaway jars and locals hanging out in the sunshine. We were lucky enough to partner with a couple of others – Unburied Treasures and Retro Kitsch as well as a local mother and daughter duo – to offer our community a great selection of preloved and vintage bargains too!

The day was more than that though – it was a day that we set aside to be purposefully thankful for the four walls we call Junktion. For the volunteers who give up their time each week to sort stock and serve slices of cake. For the opportunity to be something a little different in our community and for the space to create something a little different for the young people of Adelaide through Access The Story.

One of the special things that came out of our fair in November was the #thanksgivingtree – how cute is it?

What do you love about where you live?

Funnily enough, this little baby was donated to the shop right before our big event – what timing! It fitted what we wanted to achieve so well – a chance to picture where you are in the suburbs of Adelaide and pause for a moment to consider what it is that you love about where you live…then write it down. Doing something tangible like that can really help you pause and focus on your task at hand.

How often do we do that? Never, closely followed by hardly ever! But we should! We should take a beat and think about why we love where we live. Is it how close you are to your local shops? How many awesome parks are nearby? Can you smell the sea salt on the morning breeze? Maybe it’s your neighbours because they’re just plain awesome! If you really think about it, there’ll be something.

Here’s what a couple of the leaves attached to the tree read:

“I love where I live because there is so much bush.”
“I love where I live because it’s so close to the ocean.”
“I love where I live because our family is here.”
“So grateful to live in this beautiful suburb (Brighton) – it’s nearby Junktion which is the friendliest and best opshop in SA!”

Aw, you’re making us blush!

What we love about our community

And that’s what we wanted to learn from our community – what is it that they love about where they live. If you ask us what we love about being on the corner of Candy Road it’s the incredible kangaroos that are often dotted along the hill and the wonderful bird-life in our huge trees and how many different activities there are in our local spaces. Activities that showcase how alive our little corner of Adelaide is – the cricket club, the tennis club, the BMX track; the various fitness gatherings in the park, the dog obedience school, and the awesome playgrounds. Check out some of the links below and how you might like to be involved or find out more.

As we head towards wrapping up another wonderful year here at Junktion, we just wanted to take this moment to add one more thing we are thankful for – YOU. Our customers, our volunteers, our community. Without each of you, we wouldn’t be where we are!

So, keep thankfulness in your heart this season and have a blessed Christmas!

Poppy’s dropping by …

“Poppy” the Vintage Caravan

We’re excited to be hosting Poppy at our upcoming “Thanksgiving Fair” on Saturday the 23rd of November. This little 1969 Millard belongs to our good friend (and valuable Junktion team member) Tammy – Mum of 5, and married to the super-friendly Tiernan.

Tammy’s excited that Poppy will have some exquisite baked goods for sale on the day – why don’t you drop by between 9am & 3pm on the 23rd, suss out Poppy, purchase some treats, and check out what else we have in store?

Part of the heart of Junktion is to practice thankfulness (which is what the Thanksgiving Fair is all about!), and we’re super-thankful to have Poppy’s crew in our little community!

our Philippines connection

When you walk through the Junktion doors and snag yourself a bargain, you may be more generous than you know!

For the last two years AccessTheStory (our parent organisation) has been sponsoring 10 high school students in Cebu, Philippines.  You see, these young people have access to free education, but because they live in a slum their parents can’t afford the transport they need – and if they miss their education, they remain in a treachorous cycle of poverty.

Just over three years ago AccessTheStory’s Director, Trav, visited the Kalunasan slum and heard their stories from a local church leader.  Soon afterwards they hatched a plan to provide a scholarship for 10 students, and the impact on their families over the past 2 years has been amazing.

Next week, Trav is taking his wife Pixi (that’s right, Junktion Pixi!); two of their boys; and 4 other friends with him to connect with the students, and explore how AccessTheStory might increase the reach of this project.

Now, this means Junktion will be closed for three weeks (re-opening on Wednesday the 5th of September) – so we’re sorry about that – but after we return and you bag your next bargain (or sip your next coffee), remember that 10% of anything you spend is helping the kids in Cebu!

Keen to help now?

You can donate here (just select ‘PROJECTS’ as your donation type)

More info on donating to AccessTheStory can be found here.

last night was a BLAST – thanks to all who helped out, and all who grabbed a bargain.  Over $1600 was raised to go towards our upcoming partnership trip to the Philippines.  Junktion helps AccessTheStory sponsor some disadvantaged students in Cebu, and we’re sending a team to explore how we can extend this life-changing initiative.

Guess what??

We’re trying out our new venue before we’re fully ready to reopen – we would love you to have a nosy before it’s transformed into the new Junktion space!

Lock in the 12th of August in your diary, and pop in at our pop-up and say “Hi” … oh, and grab a vintage bargain & smooth coffee while you’re at it 🙂

exciting news!

As you’ve probably gathered, our funky little store is on the move (tomorrow – the 28th of June, is our last day in the current store)

Well, we’re excited to announce that we have secured a new venue for the junktion love! The good people of Happy Valley Baptist Church have caught the vision of junktion and are happy for us to rent out their little chapel – an agreement between the church and AccessTheStory (junktion’s umbrella organisation) is being drawn up as we speak.

This quaint little chapel will provide a charming environment for all your op-shop needs (not to mention great coffee and sweet treats!), and after we see a little bit of fit out happen in the next few weeks, we can’t wait to open the doors!

a little walk down memory lane…

Packing up the shop at 930 Marion Rd has brought with it lots of special memories of the step of faith we took in opening up junktion

It was both exciting and scary as we navigated our way through setting up a little social enterprise to fund the work of ACCESS THE STORY and serve as a place for local community to engage, enjoy a cuppa and grab a bargain.

Again, we are feeling both excited & anxious as we pack up shop and move forward to find out what the future holds for this little gem!
